M3 Stuart Background Information:

The M3 “Stuart” was the only American tank design to see combat from opening days of the war right up through the end. The Stuart was intended to be a fast, lightly armored tank, armed with numerous machine guns and a turret-mounted 37mm gun powerful enough to defeat the armor of all but the heaviest Axis tanks at the outbreak of the war.

US Occupation of Iceland

On July 8, 1941, US Marines of the 1st Provisional Marine Brigade landed on Iceland to relieve a British occupation force and prevented the use of Iceland as a German U-boat base. The Marines were issued Makinaw Coats against the Icelandic weather. Notice that American military did not adopt the M1 “Steel Pot” helmet until 1942 and Marines were issued the Springfield M1903 late into World War II.

WWII Mackinaw Coat 

“The “Coat, Mackinaw, OD”, also called the “Jeep Coat” was first issued in 1938 (called the “first pattern”). The Mackinaw had a water resistant cotton duck outer shell with a wool blanked lining. The distinguishing feature of the first pattern mackinaw was that the 30 oz. blanket lining extended visibily over the shawl collar. The coat is double breasted and held closed with two rows of three buttons each, and a cotton cloth waist belt with metal or plastic buckle.” from Olive-Drab.com

Type 97  Chi-Ha Shinhoto Background Information:

The Type 97 Chi-Ha was a medium tank used by the Imperial Japanese Army in World War II. As designed in 1936, the Type 97 was originally armed with a 57mm low-velocity gun designed for infantry support. In the aftermath of the Japanese defeat by the Soviet Union at Khalkhin Gol in 1939, a more powerful 47mm anti-tank gun was developed, copied from the successful Soviet 45mm design. This new gun was used in the “Shinhoto” (“new turret”) Chi-Ha and was produced from 1939-1941. The Type 97 was used with great success by the Japanese in their dramatic sweep of the western Pacific in 1941-42 and were particularly effective on the Malay and Philippines campaigns.  Read More…
